La sphère orale correspond au premier espace d'expérimentation et de découverte du nourrisson. Une hospitalisation prolongée en réanimation peut altérer, voire interrompre son investissement par le bébé. La mise à mal de son développement sensori-moteur et l'utilisation de l'alimentation artificielle participent à l'installation d'un trouble de l'oralité. Ce dernier impacte à la fois les fonctions alimentaires et expressives du bébé expliquant parfois la longueur de sa prise en charge.
Actuellement, le raccourcissement de plus en plus fréquent de la durée d'hospitalisation tend à exporter cette problématique en ambulatoire. L'expertise du masseur-kinésithérapeute dans le traitement fonctionnel de ce trouble est donc nécessaire afin d'assurer un relai efficient en ville.

This can impact on feeding and well as on facial expressions which can explain the extended duration of management required.
Today, the shortening of hospital length of stays tends to export the problem to out-patient management. The expertise of the physiotherapist in treating this functional problem is thus necessary in order to ensure optimal management carry-over between the hospital and the home.
